PAX Prime 2011: A Quick Word with Notch

This year at Penny Arcade Expo 2011 I was given the absolute privilege to meet and talk to Markus “Notch” Persson. For those of you who may be unaware as to who he is, Notch is the man who created Minecraft, which has become the single greatest Indie game hit of all time to my knowledge.

One may think that this kind of instantaneous wealth and fame would go to a persons head and he would suddenly feel that he is better than the rest.  This is entirely false in the case of Notch, I have previously seen video interviews and documentaries that show him as a very simple and humble man. And these assumptions of mine were confirmed and cemented after meeting him personally, he is one of the most down to Earth people I have met in a very long time considering his level of success and I’m sure without his success he would be no different. When speaking with Notch I did have to admit that I have never actually played Minecraft and cited my reasons as not wishing to find an addiction to the game (or as the Extra Credits team would have me correct to properly name as Gaming Compulsion), he took no concern to my lack of playing the game nor did he attempt to push me in saying that I should play Minecraft. Notch is what game developers, or even just creative bodies should be. Simply make a product that you like, hope that others will like it as well and be willing to accept that there will be those who will not.

I will spare myself from rambling on and keep this short and sweet with a quick summary of my overall thoughts. Notch is an amazing person, he deserves everything that he has worked for, he also gives back for everything that has been given. And I would more than enjoy meeting him again in a casual social setting and being able to call him my friend as I do to other great people I have met across the Internet. If you are reading this Notch, thank you for your time and never stop what you are doing
